by B.K.S. Iyengar is a beautifully illustrated, clearly written and inspiring book of Iyengar’s insights into yoga, life and the path to peace and happiness. The practice of yoga is the foundation of the book, and included is more than 60 photos demonstrating asana, shown step by step, accompanied by Iyengar’s illuminating observations on technique, their significance, and their benefits. This book not only presents Iyengar’s practical advice on how to perform key yoga postures, but also draws on a wide range of other material taken from interviews and world lecture tours, to the many texts Iyengar has written about yoga and about his own life experience. Through Iyengar’s wise words, we learn how yoga can help us face the many challenges of modern life, have compassion for ourselves and others, and cultivate true inner peace – just what yoga is all about! I recommend it.

The Heart of Yoga: Developing a Personal Practice
by T.K.V. Desikachar is a yoga book that I have read more than once and will read many more times. Desikachar, the son and student of the great Sanskrit scholar, healer and yogi Sri Krishnamacharya, writes about developing a personal yoga practice, one that can include many of the yoga principles and not simply asana practice. The book is divided into three main sections; The Practice of Yoga which explains the foundation and principles of a yoga practice (no explanation of yoga poses), The Understanding of Yoga which delves more into the philosophy of yoga and The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali which presents the actual sutra followed by the author’s clear and useful translation and interpretation. I consider this an excellent book and highly recommend you add it to your permanent yoga library.

Meditations from the Mat: Daily Reflections on the Path of Yoga
by Rolf Gates and Katrina Kenison is a great yoga book about living well, thoughtfully and with compassion for yourself and others. The book consists of 365 daily meditations centered on the practice of yoga. Each day’s passage starts with a relevant short quote followed by a short passage reflective of Gates experience and insight as a yoga teacher and student, athlete, former army ranger, and recovering alcoholic. Gates explains his book best in his introduction. “What I bring to these pages is my own practice, my own journey, and my own commitment to teach you by drawing forth that which is already within you. I will not have answers for all your questions, nor will I tell you how to stand in triangle pose or point your toes in shoulder stand. Instead we will travel side by side through the days of the year, observing the seasons of our practice and the discoveries we make both on and off the mat. Here, then, is a bit of one-on-one time with a teacher, a start point for the day as you travel this five-thousand-year-old path call yoga”. This is a wonderful book you will definitely enjoy. I highly recommend it.

Compassion and tolerance are not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength.
If science proves some belief of Buddhism wrong, then Buddhism will have to change. In my view, science and Buddhism share a search for the truth and for understanding reality. By learning from science about aspects of reality where its understanding may be more advanced, I believe that Buddhism enriches its own worldview.
Through difficult experiences, life sometimes becomes more meaningful.

So the first step in seeking happiness is learning. We first have to learn how negative emotions and behaviors are harmful to us and how positive emotions are helpful.
World economies are always so tenuous and we are subject to so many losses in life, but a compassionate attitude is something we can always carry with us.
I think in many ways narrow minded-attitudes lead to extreme thinking.
