SELF-SUFFICIENCY – A Season For Nonviolence – 64 Day Practice – Day 56

Posted by Kai Blue in A Season For Nonviolence on 26-03-2010

People need the dignity of work and the opportunity to provide for themselves and their families. Economic self-sufficiency is a requirement for a nonviolent world. Today, create a job for someone or help someone to find employment (for example, help them with a resume or application, help them make phone calls, dress appropriately, or practice interviewing).

My comment – I have seen the effect of “self-sufficiency” and dignity in work in the extreme first hand when I was a Volunteer /Employee for The Peace Corps.  Working with people, whom we would label as in extreme poverty, to find work or create their own small business was to see a transformation like no other. The pride in being able to provide for their families, in being able to put in an honest day’s work was a gift they appreciated and cherished. I think, sometimes you need to experience how others less fortunate than ourselves live to really appreciate what we have. Work is the cornerstone of many people’s live so helping someone find employment has far more consequences than a paycheck.
