About
What Brought Me To Yoga
Yoga Head to Toe is about my journey into the world of yoga. In June of 2009 I went to my first yoga class, an Iyengar Yoga class, in a small studio in La Mesa California. A friend had invited me to come along and she always had such great things to say about yoga in her life that I thought I’d give it a try. During that first class I remember we started out with chanting (a first for me and I will admit I was a little self-conscious), after we got down on the mat and did yoga poses for ninety minutes (ouch) and ended the practice with total relaxation (another first for me). Afterwards I was feeling pretty darn good – I was worked out, stretched out and relaxed all in one. I think I was hooked after that first class and I continued to go to yoga practice twice a week over the next three months. I was lucky. I felt I had great teachers in those beginning classes. They were excellent in their knowledge of yoga postures, helpful, stern but patient. But most importantly for me was the bits and pieces I would pick up on yoga philosophy and life style throughout the class. There was always the subtle undercurrent that asana practice was just one part of the big picture of yoga, just one step in the process of achieving “oneness”. Hmmm what exactly did that mean?
I am an avid reader. I am usually reading at least three books on various subjects at one time. Yoga books became my passion. I read Iyengar books, books by Stephen Cope, Judith Lasater, T.K.V Desikachar and others. I am still reading yoga books and honestly enjoy and am grateful for the amazing wisdom of all these authors. They are helping me understand the true meaning of yoga.
Where Am I Now
After moving to the beautiful windward side of the Big Island of Hawaii, I found two great studios to attend classes at and have begun to practice yoga at home. As time goes by it has become more and more a part of my lifestyle and seems to be a perfect fit with my other passions. I would like to share my experience and journey with you. I hope you’ll stay with me whether as a fellow student or a simple observer as I take this path into yoga.
